Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the Halifax Shipyard today to announce the Government of Canada and Irving Shipbuilding Inc. have successfully reached an agreement in principle that paves the way for the construction of Canada’s combat fleet under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.




Visiting Canadian Forces Members Deployed Overseas for the Holidays

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, accompanied by His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and General Walt Natynczyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, has concluded a four-day visit with members of the Canadian Forces deployed overseas during the holidays. After meeting with the crew of HMCS Vancouver, docked in Italy, then travelling to Canada’s Intermediate Staging Terminal in Kuwait, Minister MacKay concluded his trip by spending Christmas with CF members training Afghan security forces in Kabul. While in theatre, Minister MacKay spoke with US General John R. Allen, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).



Emergency Preparedness Funding for New Glasgow Police Service

Peter was pleased to announce an investment from the Government of Canada for emergency communications equipment for the New Glasgow Police Service under the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP). JEPP supports local emergency preparedness projects such as training, the purchase of emergency response equipment, or emergency planning and exercises. By investing in this emergency radio communications equipment, the Government of Canada is helping our emergency better prepare to respond to incidents that could claim lives.



Marking Completion of First Structural Upgrades on Aurora Aircraft

Minister Peter MacKay joined IMP Aerospace in celebrating a milestone in an upgrade project that will see Canada’s fleet of CP-140 Aurora aircraft flying into the next decade.The first of 10 CP-140 Aurora aircraft – Aircraft 112 – received its completed set of structural upgrades through the Aurora Structural Life Extension Project (ASLEP). The project involves major upgrades to the body of the aircraft, replacement of the wings and horizontal stabilizers, and will increase the structural life and operational availability of the fleet into the 2020 timeframe. The CP-140 Aurora is Canada’s only strategic maritime surveillance aircraft that is often used to patrol Canada’s coastlines, safeguarding our waters from foreign threats. The upgraded aircraft will be based at 14 Wing Greenwood, and 19 Wing Comox. The Nova Scotia economy and workers are benefitting from important investments in the aerospace sector.

Heritage Kiosk Unveiled in Durham, Pictou County

Peter unveiled a new community heritage kiosk in Durham— the second of seven kiosks being constructed across Pictou County promoting cultural and eco-tourism. This $54,000 investment in the kiosk trail underscores the Government of Canada’s commitment to the growth and development of rural communities throughout Nova Scotia and across Atlantic Canada. The first kiosk in the series was unveiled in November on Blue Mountain.

Devil's Brigade Honourary Membership Presentation

Peter received a Honourary Lifetime Membership from the First Special Service Force Association. The membership was presented by three Nova Scotia members of the FSSF: Herb Peppard, Hector MacInnis, and Vernon Doucette. The First Special Service Force, also known as the Devil’s Brigade, was unique. Not only was it made up of both American and Canadian soldiers who trained and fought as a single elite unit, but it was formed in 1942, when the very idea of special operations units was still in its infancy. First Special Service Force was not just an experiment: it went on to achieve a remarkable string of successes in combat. And today, the soldiers of the special operations forces of both countries look back at the members of the Devil’s Brigade as their forefathers.



Halifax International Security Forum 2011

The three-day event brought together over 300 prominent defence and security experts and practitioners from around the world to discuss ideas and share insights on important global security challenges. Topics discussed include changes to the security environment since 9/11; the impact of fiscal restraint on security; the future of the transatlantic alliance; as well as emerging issues such as the future of Israel-Palestine relations and the post-revolution environment in Libya.



Unveiling First of Hero Class Vessels

In a ceremony at Irving Shipyard, Minister Peter Mackay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia and Minister Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans unveiled the first of nine 'Hero' class mid-shore patrol vessels currently being built for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Coast Guard 'Hero' class vessels are named after Canadian heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice for Canada. The first vessel in the class to enter service will be the CCGS Private Robertson V.C. Members of Robertson family accompanied the minister on the tour. Private James Peter Robertson, 34 and with the 27th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 6 November 1917 at Passchendaele, Belgium. Private Robertson was born in Stellarton, Nova Scotia where a memorial wall honouring veterans bears his name.

Every November 11th, Canadians come together to mark the service and countless sacrifices of Canadian Forces members, past and present, here at home and around the world. On Remembrance Day, when Canadians from all corners of this great country join together in silence, may we fill those empty moments with our thoughts of gratitude and compassion for the men and women, and their families, who have given so very much for the causes of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Canadians are eternally grateful for the sacrifices of those who serve to protect us. Lest we forget.



Military Heroes Return Home - Op Mobile

Minister Peter MacKay felt privileged to join family and friends in welcoming home and celebrating the safe return of Canadian Air Force personnel from Operation MOBIILE at 14 Wing Greenwood . For eight months they helped to protect Libyan citizens from a brutal dictator, enforce UN sanctions, and secure access for humanitarian aid. Thank you to the families of military personnel who support them in their work and who bears a burden of worry and responsibility while they are away. On behalf of all Canadians, from coast to coast to coast, thank you and congratulations on a job well done!

Cape Breton University Opens Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment

Peter was proud to join Cape Breton University and community residents open the Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment. The Government of Canada committed over $8 million in funding through Industry Canada (Knowledge Infrastructure Program) and ECBC for the centre in 2009. This new facility provides students, researchers and research chairs with the modern facilities they need to conduct cutting-edge environmental research. These improvements allow the school to strengthen its research focus on sustainable energy and managing industrial pollution. Cape Breton University has shown a strong commitment to providing the best possible learning environment for students. CBU ranks among the top schools in Canada for student satisfaction is a great accomplishment.
